Police | Man charged with assault, shoplifting after shoving Kmart employee

A Salters man was arrested by Conway police after a Kmart employee reported being shoved when he tried to stop the man from shoplifting, according to a police report.

Fredrick Maurice Burgess, 56, was charged with simple assault and shoplifting after a Kmart employee confronted him inside the store at 1610 Church St, police said.

The employee told police that at 7:20 p.m. Monday when confronted while trying to leave the store, Burgess pushed him and he fell back into several display cases, according to the report. The employee suspected Burgess of shoplifting in the store.

Police recovered two ink cartridges and a bottle of heartburn medicine, valued at $73.97 inside Burgess’ jacket, the report showed.
