Many women can remember Oil of Olay's former tagline, "I don't intend to grow old gracefully," and still claim it as their own. Growing old gracefully can conjure up images of more laugh lines and crows' feet than we care to share, even with our own mirrors.
According to a survey conducted in 2009 by The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and published in March 2010, "women continue to be the most likely candidates for facial plastic surgery," making up 84 percent of all surgical and nonsurgical procedures. However, men and women are equally split when it comes to reconstructive procedures. The survey results show a continuation of the trend from the previous year, where consumers are opting to have less-invasive procedures to look and feel refreshed.
The economy is playing a role in the growing trend. The latest trends cited by surgeons show not only are consumers having less expensive procedures, but 80 percent of physicians surveyed say patients are making these choices in order to remain competitive in the workplace. And 77 percent of physicians reported that patients are more educated about plastic surgery.
A non-invasive treatment doesn't deeply penetrate the skin. There are different levels of invasiveness: minimally invasive, moderately invasive and non-invasive. A treatment that doesn't involve a needle or scalpel is a non-invasive treatment, such as microdermabrasion. Moderately invasive treatments involve a laser or a needle, rather than a scalpel or a knife. Examples of moderately invasive treatments are Botox®, Restylane® or Perlane®, which are injections. Minimally invasive treatments include spider vein treatments, light-based treatments (to remove sunspots) and hair removal.

More people than ever took advantage of non-invasive procedures administered by facial plastic surgeons, the survey showed. Botox® was the treatment that saw the greatest increase in usage, followed by hyaluronic acid (lip filler) and chemical peels. Both Botox® and Dysport® are neurotoxins that are commonly used for facial and neck rejuvenation. While Botox® has been used for many years, Dysport® was approved by the Federal Drug Administration in May 2009.
The procedure that is right for you depends upon your individual anatomy as well as your desires. Many times a combination of procedures may be what suits you best. At Carolina Coastal Plastic Surgery, Dr. Steven White's philosophy is to create an enjoyable, relaxed and safe environment for his patients. He insists on a long-term relationship with his patients before, during and after their procedures. Having elective cosmetic plastic surgery is based on want - not need. The less stressed a patient is regarding the procedure, the more pleasurable the post-operation period is. "There are a wide range of cosmetic procedure options for people to choose from these days," says White. "My practice has grown from face lifts and breast augmentation to liposuction, Botox®, body contouring and more."
New advanced techniques include ProLipo™ and BBL™ treatments allow for faster patient recovery, less bruising and swelling. Patients experience less discomfort and have a faster recovery. CCPS is one of the few training centers in the U.S. to teach ProLipo Plus™ and other laser modalities to plastic surgeons and other practitioners from the U.S. and Europe.
"The bottom line is to be your best," says White. "And if you can't do it alone, we can help. Remember, if you imagine it, we can create it."

Nirvana Plastic Surgery in Myrtle Beach specializes in cosmetic surgeries that enhance the face, body and breast in both women and men. Services include SmartLipo™, abdominoplasty, liposuction, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, face, neck and brow lifts, upper and lower eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, lip enhancement, and Botox®. They treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles using three of the safest and most proven products on the market - JUVÉDERM®, Restylane® and Perlane®. These fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid which is a compound found in all living organisms. For shallow facial wrinkles, Restylane® is preferred, which is injected into the dermis and softens fine lines. For deeper wrinkles, they use JUVÉDERM® or Perlane®. These products are slightly more viscous than Restylane® and are injected just under the dermis. They are ideal for areas such as nasolabial folds (lines between the nose and corner of the mouth) and marionette lines (between the lips and chin). "Today's patients are overwhelmed with options," said Dr. Stephen Duffy of Nirvana Plastic Surgery. "We take a comprehensive approach to each patient to review the areas they wish to improve upon to recommend the procedure that is tailored to their needs for optimum results."
