N.C. man gets 10 years in Myrtle Beach tanning salon assaults

A North Carolina man charged in connection with two assaults at Myrtle Beach tanning salons was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the crimes, according to court records.

Larry James Pettit, 39, of Hope Mills, N.C., pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping in the incidents and Circuit Court Judge Steven John ordered him to serve 10 years on each count. The sentences will run concurrently. Pettit also was ordered to pay court costs.

On Dec. 2, 2009, police said Pettit had the intent to engage in sexual battery with two women, using aggravated force. Pettit was arrested in North Carolina and extradited to Horry County to face charges in the two assaults.

The first assault happened at Ultra Tan at 38th Avenue North and the second assault happened later that day at Elite Tanning on Robert Grissom Parkway.

The victim in the second assault ran to the fitness club next door to call police. In both incidents, the women were not physically harmed, police said.
