Woman sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison in Myrtle Beach Kmart purse snatching, hit and run

A Georgia woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges related to a November 2009 purse snatching that injured three people and was sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison.

Katherine Michelle Johnson, 32, of Hepizibah, Ga., pleaded guilty to assault and battery with intent to kill and three counts of hit and run with great bodily injury in connection with the Nov. 9, 2009, incident in the parking lot of Kmart in Myrtle Beach.

Circuit Court Judge Paul M. Burch sentenced Johnson to 12 1/2 years on the assault and battery with intent to kill charge and 10 years apiece on the hit and run charges. The sentences will run concurrently.

Brenda Williams, 51, tried to help 73-year-old Mary Fagnant, whose purse was taken during the incident. Williams suffered major injuries and is confined to a wheelchair after she was dragged and run over in the parking lot.

Williams said she saw Fagnat screaming for help after a woman snatched the purse from Fagnant's shopping cart.
