A woman died late Sunday after the vehicle she was riding in crashed into the Intracoastal Waterway in Socastee, according to authorities.
An autopsy was performed Monday morning on Kelly Moody, 48, and preliminary results showed her cause of death was drowning, said Horry County Coroner Tony Hendrick said.
Troopers with the S.C. Highway Patrol are investigating the crash that occurred about 11:30 p.m. Sunday on Peachtree Landing, which is located off S.C. 544 in Socastee, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins with the highway patrol.
A 1993 Honda car disregarded the stop sign at the end of the road and ran into the water, Collins said. A man was driving the vehicle and was able to escape from it, but Moody did not.
The man has not been charged in the incident, but troopers are still investigating it, Collins said.
More details will be posted as they become available.
