Conway woman charged in 2008 killing faces more criminal charges

A Conway woman faces more charges as she waits for her trial on charges in the 2008 death of another woman, according to court records.

Brittany Johnson, 19, was indicted on charges of assault on a correctional facility employee and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to Horry County grand jury indictments released this week.

Johnson already faces a murder charge in the June 24, 2008 shooting death of Monica Burroughs, 29, also of Conway, according to court records.

Police said Johnson shot Burroughs in the chest in front of her home on Bayside Avenue, in the Huckabee Heights public housing community in Conway.

She died 40 minutes later at Conway Medical Center from a gunshot wound to the chest, Horry County Coroner Robert Edge said. The wound was from a .45-caliber weapon. Burroughs left behind four children.

A circuit court judge denied bail for Johnson, and she has been held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center since her arrest on July 2, 2008 in Hartsville by the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

The latest charges filed against Johnson stem from Nov. 8, 2008, when authorities said she assaulted a correctional officer and on May 10 when she allegedly beat another woman with a plastic food tray while in jail.
