Conway woman killed in hit-and-run in Georgetown County

Officials are searching for the driver of a vehicle who struck and killed a 36-year-old Conway woman who was standing near the side of the road in Georgetown County this morning soon after she crashed her vehicle.

Toni Montondo was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:25 a.m., said Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson.

The victim crashed her 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe into a tree around 2 a.m. after disregarding a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. 701 and Exodus Drive, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The incident occurred in front of the Mount Tabor Baptist Church in the Yauhannah Community, Johnson said.

The victim was standing near the vehicle when she was struck by another vehicle and killed, Collins said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman left the scene, Collins said.

The highway patrol's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the crash and hopeful to learn what type of vehicle struck the woman and the exact location of the victim when she was struck, Collins said.

An autopsy is being performed this morning, Johnson said.
