Police have opened most lanes of S.C. 31 between mile markers 15 and 18 after a brush fire earlier forced lane closures.
All southbound lanes on S.C. 31 and two northbound lanes are now open. S.C. Highway Patrol closed a portion of the highway when a brush fire broke out and threatened up to 10 homes at one point in the Berkshire Forest community. The fire is now under control, according to Horry County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Leslie Yancey.
The fire began around 3:45 p.m. The road was closed because some firefighters were battling the flames from alongside S.C. 31.
