An Elgin man told Myrtle Beach police that a California woman took cash from him for a rental house that she does not own, according to a police report.

The 51-year-old man told police he saw a Craigslist ad for a rental house at 7701 Beach Drive and after several email exchanges sent a woman in Oceanside, Calif., $500 as a down payment, police said.

The man told police on Wednesday he learned the woman does not own the house after she failed to show up to meet him at it, according to the report. The ad was removed from the site and police are investigating the incident.
