Jones homers again, Pelicans hold off Keys

Mycal Jones continued to flash his power and former Pelican Cody Johnson quickly made himself at home as Myrtle Beach topped Frederick 5-3 on Wednesday night at BB&T Coastal Field.

Jones, who homered twice on Tuesday, led off the bottom of the first with a shot to left field for his sixth home run of the season to give Myrtle Beach an early lead.

"I recognize a fastball in early, and I've been able to put good swings on them lately," Jones said. "When I'm struggling at the plate, I'm fouling those pitches back. Now I'm putting them in play, and you get good results when you put it in play."

The Pelicans (49-67 first half, 23-23 second half) added two more runs in the inning when Dan Nelson reached on a fielder's choice, Mike Jones singled and Johnson brought them home with a two-out, two-run double to right in his first at-bat for Myrtle Beach since late in the 2009 season.

Johnson played 122 games with a .242 batting average for the Pelicans last season before being called up to Double-A Mississippi late in the season. He began 2010 with Mississippi and was solid before going on the disabled list with a hamstring pull that occurred while he was trying to leg out an infield single. He played six games with the Gulf Coast Braves while rehabbing, but when he went back to Mississippi he went just 1-for-31 at the plate while striking out 20 times.

"I can't look at it as a demotion. It's just an opportunity to come down and play everyday. We had six outfielders in Mississippi and I just ended up being the odd man out. I was the one struggling the most," Johnson said.

Johnson was 1-for-2 with two RBIs on Wednesday while walking twice and striking out once.

It was the second straight win for Myrtle Beach.
