Myrtle Beach police charge couple following assault over foul language

A North Carolina couple were charged with attacking another couple who were walking along Ocean Boulevard after a dispute about obscenities, according to a police report.

Jake Gibb, 23, and Jessica Marie Roberts, 25, were each charged with third-degree assault and battery after police were called at 1 a.m. Wednesday to the area of Ocean Boulevard and 13th Avenue South, police said. Roberts also was charged with public intoxication.

The arrests occurred after a 31-year-old man from Campobello and a 33-year-old Pisgah Forest woman reported being assaulted by the couple, according to the report.

The woman told police Roberts attacked her as she walked along Ocean Boulevard with the man and their 5-year-old son because the suspects were cursing loudly and the man asked them to be mindful of their language around the boy.

The woman said Roberts grabbed her by the throat, shouted obscenities and pushed her before the woman punched Roberts to get free from her, according to the report. The woman said they walked away from the area and soon after Gibb came up in a vehicle.

The woman said Gibb got out of the car and attacked the man before Gibb left the area, according to the report. Police saw Roberts in the area and told officers she was too drunk to remember what started the incident.

Roberts later told police she and her boyfriend, Gibb, were arguing when the woman said something to them, according to the report. Gibb was arrested at his motel room.
