Thieving Myrtle Beach Pelicans steal seven bases in victory

Bats that were nearly asleep the night before woke up at the right times and Pelicans baserunners went on a stealing spree Saturday as Myrtle Beach dropped Lynchburg 5-2 on Saturday night at BB&T Coastal Field.

The Pelicans racked up seven stolen bases, including three by Mycal Jones and two from L.V. Ware. Mycal Jones went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored twice, Cory Harrilchak was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, L.V. Ware was 2-for-2 with a double and two steals and Mike Jones was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Brett Oberholtzer was shaky at times, but held on to improve to 3-3 on the season in his 10th start. The right hander gave up seven hits but just two runs over five innings with no walks and five strikeouts.

Chad Rogers, who was activated off the disabled list Saturday, threw an inning of one-hit relief, Yeller Castro threw a hitless eighth inning and Luis Avian gave up a hit and had a strikeout in the ninth as he picked up his sixth save in seven tries this season.

Lance Janke (4-6) took the loss, giving up six hits and four earned runs over five innings while walking three and striking out two.

Mycal Jones led off the bottom of the first for Myrtle Beach (36-57 overall, 10-13 second half) with a single, then stole second and kept moving to third on a Lance Janke wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice hit by Cory Harrilchak.

Lynchburg (38-54, 9-13) took the lead in the top of the third, starting with a double from Chris McMurray, who went to third on an Efrain Contreras sac hit. Brodie Greene doubled down the left field line to bring in McMurray, and Greene scored on a Carlos Mendez double to put the Hillcats up 2-1.

Myrtle Beach had an immediate answer in the bottom half of the inning. Ware lead off with a double and was nearly caught leading too far off second base by a McMurray throw, but he took off and was called safe at third as he beat the throw from second. Mycal Jones then singled to bring in Ware, then stole second and third and scored on a Mike Jones sac fly to put the Pelicans back on top.

Harrilchak hit a one-out double in the fifth, went to third on a Dan Nelson sacrifice and scored on a Mike Jones single. Harrilchak added a leadoff double in the seventh and scored the game's final run on a Jordan Kreke triple as Myrtle Beach split the four-game series with Lynchburg.

Myrtle Beach has a day off today before returning to action on Monday with a three-game set against Wilmington, Del.
