A lot of golfere have a hard time with trying to "lift" the ball into the air when chipping. This type of thought produces skull and fat shots. I use a simple dowel that extends the clubshaft. I place it on the grip and then place your hands on the club with the dowel in your fingers as well. Now the dowel is in front of my left side at address. The goal here is to not let the dowel hit my left side on the follow through. If it does you are trying to "scoop" the ball into the air. If it doesn't hit your left side you have performed the chipping technique correctly. Work on this until you can keep from bruising your left side.
