Report | Myrtle Beach man said he thought girlfriend was burglar, assaulted her

A Myrtle Beach man was arrested after police said he assaulted his girlfriend, who he claimed was a burglar, according to a police report.

David Nelson Mather, 49, was charged with criminal domestic violence after police were called at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to the 800 block of 66th Avenue North, police said.

Mather told police he came home, saw a broken window and went in to subdue the burglar in his home, according to the report. Police asked Mather if the 35-year-old woman was his girlfriend and he said they had broken up.

The woman told police the couple had lived together for about two weeks and when she came home she didn’t have a key so she broke in through the front window, according to the report. The woman said she argued with Mather and he hit her.

The woman suffered numerous cuts to her arms and legs and bruises to her face.
