A man in his mid 80s was rescued from the water at 50th Avenue North in North Myrtle Beach after an unknown ailment and taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Forrest Peeler, 87, of Maiden, N.C. was pronounced dead at the hospital Monday night, according to Deputy Horry County Coroner Tamara Willard. The coroner's office will perform an autopsy Tuesday morning to determine whether Peeler died of natural causes while floating on a raft in the water or whether he drowned.
North Myrtle Beach beach patrol responded to a call for a man in distress, said city spokeswoman Nicole Aiello. She said it was unclear whether the man was having trouble in the water or whether there was another medical condition that caused the swimmer in distress call. The incident happened after lifeguards were off duty for the day.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
