Hoover's gem puts Myrtle Beach Pelicans in position to earn series sweep

An up-and-comer started things off nicely and a seasoned veteran helped close things out as Myrtle Beach topped Winston-Salem 2-0 on Tuesday night at BB&T Coastal Field.

Starter J.J. Hoover picked up the win, giving up just two hits over six innings and Scott Proctor, an off-season signee of the Braves, pitched a solid seventh inning as three relievers helped Myrtle Beach (21-38) win its second straight against the Dash (38-21).

Hoover, the Carolina League's pitcher of the week for the last week in May, was mostly solid over six innings, throwing 62 of his 99 pitches for strikes while giving up two hits, walking three and striking out five.

"He pitched outstanding. That's a high pitch count," Pelicans manager Rocket Wheeler said. "We would have liked to have seen him go more because he was doing so good."

Hoover improved to 4-3 as he beat Winston-Salem for the first time in three tries this season.

Hoover gave way to Proctor to start the seventh. Proctor, who is coming off Tommy John surgery just over a year ago and hasn't thrown in a major-league game since he was with the Dodgers in 2008, faced four batters in the seventh, striking out the first batter he faced before surrounding a walk with a pair of groundouts.

"To have Proctor come in and do what he did, to show the kids this is how it's done," Wheeler said. "He went right after 'em."

Proctor began the season at Class AAA Gwinnett, but was moved down to Class A Myrtle Beach to get in more work.

"I'm just trying to stay within myself and make pitches,'' Proctor said. "... I got myself in trouble in spring training pushing myself too much."

Angelo Paulino came in the eighth for the Pelicans and gave up a hit and struck out one, and Benino Pruneda came on in the ninth and struck out three while walking one.

Dash left-hander Charlie Leesman (7-2) lost for the first time since April 10 against Kinston. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits over six innings with four walks and four strikeouts.

L.V. Ware was again key for the Pelicans. The center fielder, who had the game-winning RBI on Monday, led off the bottom of the fifth with a single for Myrtle Beach, then scored when Dan Nelson drove a double to the wall in right-center field.

Nelson came home when Dash second baseman Drew Garcia knocked down a chopper from Mike Jones but couldn't make the play as the ball trickled into the outfield.

Myrtle Beach had plenty of other chances to plate runs. Mike Jones led off the second with a single and Samuel Sime walked, but Leesman struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

In the fourth Jones was hit by a pitch and Samuel Sime and Jesus Sucre both singled to load the bases with one out, but a quick play by Leesman on a Matt Kennelly chopper got Jones as home before Luis Sumoza flied out to end the inning.

The Pelicans have a chance to earn a series sweep for the first time this season when Randall Delgado (RHP, 2-5, 2.50) takes the mound against Winston-Salem's Terry Doyle (RHP, 2-2, 2.77) tonight at 7:05.

Notes

Pelicans pitcher Angelo Paulino will head for Class AA Mississippi today. Entering Tuesday's game, Paulino had a 2.91 ERA and a 1-1 record in 19 appearances this season. The right-handed reliever had 35 strikeouts and 16 walks in Myrtle Beach.
