Wedding doesn't help Myrtle Beach Pelicans avoid sweep

For the first time in franchise history, a couple tied the knot at home plate prior to the Pelicans' Sunday game against Salem.

The good vibes didn't translate on the field. The Birds were swept in the three-game set against Salem after losing 3-2 at BB&T Coastal Field.

And yet again, Myrtle Beach found a way to beat itself.

Starting pitcher Matt Crim struck out eight batters through the first four innings. He was eventually replaced after 52/3 innings by David Francis after giving up a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth.

Francis followed up by walking the first two batters he faced. A Matt Kennelly passed ball then allowed Salem's Ryan Dent to score and the Red Sox to take their first and only necessary lead of the game.

So, the question was this: Are the Pelicans (11-26) simply not talented enough to overcome those little mistakes that seem to continue to happen?

"We've definitely got the talent," Kennelly said. "We've got a good ball club. Hopefully this thing will turn around."

Salem's pitchers made sure the three-game sweep against the Pelicans and a poor homestand would happen. After Red Sox starter Brock Huntzinger's five innings, reliever Michael Lee sparkled for 22/3.

The 6-foot-7 righty retired the first six batters he faced, and the only runner he allowed was Amadeo Zazueta, who reached on an error in the eighth.

Salem's Kyle Fernandes then finished off the last four outs, earning the save.

"It's a pitcher's league," Zazueta said. "There are going to be good hitters, but better pitchers than hitters."

By the point another Salem (24-12) pitcher had his way with the Pelicans, though, manager Rocket Wheeler was gone. Wheeler was tossed for the first time this season in the eighth after arguing a strike call against center fielder Mike Daniel.

Daniel squared to bunt in an attempt to move Zazueta to third.

Wheeler originally kept his comments for home plate umpire Shaylor Smith coming from just outside the dugout. But as soon as he took off toward Smith, the manager was ejected.

"I didn't see the check swing, but that kind of thing encourages the team to play harder," Zazueta said. "He's a manager trying to look after us."

Said Kennelly: "He got fired up. The boys got a little fired up; we just didn't come through with enough to get the job done."

Notes

The pregame festivities at BB&T included the aforementioned wedding between Lacey Hardy and his new wife, Jan Clough. The local couple met previously at a Pelicans game; Hardy also proposed at the stadium.

The service had Hardy's family dressed in Braves clothing, while Clough's "team" was dressed in Boston Red Sox gear. The wedding was presided over by Pastor Lindsey Inman, who was dressed up as - what else - an umpire.
