Pimentel flirts with perfection as Salem rolls past Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Salem pitcher Stolmy Pimentel threw six perfect innings as the Red Sox topped the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 9-1 on Saturday night at BB&T Coastal Field.

The right-hander knew he hadn't allowed a runner to reach base, but said he wasn't overly concerned with a chance at complete-game perfection when he was pulled after 18 outs.

"I wasn't thinking about that. I was thinking about getting going and preparing for the next batter," Pimentel said. "I was just thinking about throwing strikes, no matter what happened. You have to keep going and don't think about it."

Red Sox manager Kevin Boles said he had no qualms about pulling Pimentel after the sixth.

"You've got to keep the big picture in mind, and that's a big-league career," Boles said. "That's what we are looking for for Stolmy Pimentel. He did his job ... the pitch count is what it is and we are going to follow through."

The 20-year-old Dominican got plenty of help from his defense. Pimentel had four strikeouts in the game as he improved to 4-2.

"Our guys played a pretty clean game, and especially the [defensive] plays. There were a couple of plays out there that were well above average."

The Red Sox (24-12) went to work early on offense, posting three runs in the first, keyed by a two-RBI single from Drew Hedman off Myrtle Beach lefthanded starter Brett Oberholtzer. Salem added two more runs in the third when Ryan Lavarnway led off with a double to the centerfield fence, went to third on Tim Federowicz's deep flyout and came home when Alex Hassan hit his second home run of the season to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Oberholtzer gave up five runs on 12 hits in five innings with a walk and three strikeouts while falling to 1-3.

Yeliar Castro replaced Oberholtzer to start the sixth inning but didn't fair much better, giving up a single to Middlebrooks, who scored on Federowicz's two-out RBI single.

In the seventh Ryan Dent singled, Castro plunked Jon Hee and walked Tejeda to load the bases, then walked Middlebrooks to bring in Salem's seventh run, and Hee scored moments later when Lavernway's hard chopper took a tough hop off the infield dirt and over Samuel Sime at third.

Salem tacked on another run in the eighth when Myrtle Beach pitcher Tyrelle Harris, who was called up from Low-A Rome earlier in the day, gave up a single in Drew Hedman and an RBI-double from Ryan Dent. Harris sat the Red Sox down in order in the top of the ninth.

William Latimer seemed poised to finish off Pimentel's perfect start when he retired Myrtle Beach (11-25) in order in the seventh, but Gerry Rodriguez's double in the bottom of the eighth broke up the chance at shared perfection, and Matt Kennelly shot a double into the corner in right field, driving in Rodriguez and helping the Pelicans avoid being shut out for the sixth time this season.

Blake Maxwell closed out the ninth inning for Salem as the Red Sox dropped the Pelicans for the ninth-straight time.

Middlebrooks, Lavarnway, Hedman and Dent each went 3-for-5 for Salem as the Red Sox rolled up 19 hits in the game. Rodriguez had two of Myrtle Beach's four hits, going 2-for-4.

Myrtle Beach will try to avoid the series sweep this afternoon at 3:05 when they send right-hander Brock Huntzinger (2-2, 3.31) to the mound against lefty Matt Crim (2-1, 3.81).
