What is the top issue in your race and how would you address it? The most important issue for the School Board and the school system right now is the selection of the new superintendent. This selection will shape the direction the school system takes for years to come. The current School Board is working hard and doing a good job making this selection process efficient and appropriate. I trust they have made a correct selection. This is extremely important to bring harmony and direction to the school personnel. It is difficult for the administration and teachers to focus on education, if, in the back of their minds, there is turmoil, rumors, and poor morale. Everyone can be happier teaching when behind the scenes from the students, everything is running smoothly.
What in your experience has most prepared you for this office? Why? Several things have prepared me for elected office. My experience on the Planning Board and other committee in Leland has aided me in understanding the process of government. My profession has given me the opportunity to be an employee of local municipalities, small firms, and national corporations which has given me a lot of experience with business decisions, personnel, budgeting and critical thinking. My involvement in the community and family has helped me to understand the importance of the developmental years of children and how small changes and direct support can change for the better the path that a child takes in life.
How do you gauge the will of the people? Me and my family are the people. I can represent them well, because my concerns for my 5 children, are their concerns also. The problems and difficulties we face everyday are similar to those of other parents of children in the school system. Also, I have family and friends with school age children that will give me feedback. I am easily accessible to the public and well-known in the County. I am active in the community and easily approachable. I am certain that I will hear and understand the concerns that parents have with the school system and bring their voice to the School Board.
