Improve success level for our students through increased community support and “ownership” of their schools. Enlist as many community members as possible to be tutors , mentors , volunteers , and role models for our students. When the students become more and more successful then the community will show more interest and pride in their schools.
During the school years (1972 - 2001) , I taught 6th , 7th , & 8th grade students (Southport Middle and Shallotte Middle). Teaching , at the middle school level , presents multiple challenges every day. They are such a unique group , that you need to try as many various approaches , in order to reach all the students. Over the years , you finally come to the reality , that the students are capable and willing to learn and they will gladly help each other in every way possible.
How do you gauge the will of the people? When the students / citizens of Brunswick county express concerns the school board needs to listen and take action. If this requires making hard decisions , the students / citizens are worth all the help the board can provide. All decisions should have their success as the goal.
