Myrtle Beach Pelicans' misery continues with another loss

Let the early season misery continue.

Winston-Salem completed a four-game sweep of the Pelicans on Thursday at BB&T Coastal Field, beating Myrtle Beach 9-3 to extend what has been a miserable run since the third game of the season.

"Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the other team's pitchers," manager Rocket Wheeler said. "But we'll get things ironed out and we'll get on a roll here."

Thanks to Winston-Salem starter Nevin Griffith, that turnaround was put on hold at least another day.

Things went from bad to worse in the seventh when Myrtle Beach, already trailing by five, when starting pitcher J.J. Hoover threw two wild pitches to one batter. The two errant throws allowed consecutive Winston-Salem runners to score from third.

After the second, Hoover plunked Loman. The exchange ended Hoover's night, and - for all purposes - that of the Pelicans.

The Birds (4-10) have now lost 10 of their last 11 games after the 3-0 start. It includes winless series against Salem (Va.) and Winston-Salem (N.C.).

Cole Miles made his first start in nearly two weeks. Miles, who suffered a deep bruise on his right knee during the season-opening series, was the designated hitter and batted leadoff.

But despite Wheeler's contention last week that Miles - who was walked twice and hit by a pitch - would make a difference, it appears the team needs more help.

It was the first mistake that started the Pelicans downfall. After Dash (11-3) center fielder Justin Greene hit a single into right, Myrtle Beach's Calvin Culver misplayed the ball, allowing Drew Garcia to score from first base.

"Sometimes, that's how it goes when it's going bad," Wheeler said. "That one bad thing turns everything going."

From there, Winston-Salem's bats made sure the Pelicans' most recent home series was going to be more of the same
