The first thing you want to understand in chipping is that you want to fly the ball to the front part of the green and then it needs to roll to the hole. I tell my students you want to "turn it into a putt as soon as possible." I will have them throw a ball onto the green. Most of them will do it over-handed and try to fly the ball to the hole. I will throw one under-handed let it land on the front of the green and it rolls to the hole. Mine is usually closer to the hole than theirs. So understand you want to roll it, not fly it.
