Beach Ball Classic roundup: Wisconsin team coasts past Socastee

Alexander Hamilton scored 44 points in the paint as it cruised to a 79-43 win over Socastee in the opening game of the tournament.

Elgin Cook led a trio of juniors for the Wildcats, scoring a game-high 21 points, Darnell Harris had 18 and Chuck Lee added 15. Cook and Harris had eight rebounds each and Lee had seven assists.

Brandon Alston tallied 13 points for the Braves, who shot 32 percent from the floor.

"Playing a [host] team in a national tournament you can never take them lightly," said Alexander Hamilton coach Tom Diener.

"When you have your friends and family here to support you it makes it easier to control a game, but I think they ran into a buzz saw. Our guys played really well and once we were able to eliminate [Socastee's] dribble penetration."

Socastee drops into the consolation bracket and will play Tuesday at noon against the loser of Monday's game between Mt. St. Joseph (Md.) vs Cedar Hill (Texas).

Nichols (N.Y.) 79, Daniel 66 | Will Regan rejected two Daniel shots in the opening minutes of the second half and sent a message to the Lions that things were going to be different after the break. Daniel had controlled the tempo until that point, forcing the Vikings to play at a faster pace than they were used to.

"Like any team, we want to play to our strengths," said Nichols coach Greg Plumb, whose team turned the ball over 10 times in the first half. "We've played teams that like to play at a faster pace, but we need to slow it down and get it inside to our big guys because we aren't going to beat too many people up and down the floor."

The slow pace flustered the Lions resulting in poor shot selection. Daniel shot just 35 percent from the floor while Nichols netted 54 percent of its attempts.

Regan ended the game with 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots while Stan Weir and Ron Canestro added 22 and 19, respectively. Conner Vandergriff posted a double-double for the Vikings (5-0) with 10 points and 12 boards.

DeAndre Hopkins led four Daniel players in double digits with 14 points.
