Amanda Lepore, NYC It Girl
Q: All my role models are over-the-top Hollywood divas from the 1940s, '50s and '60s. I find the real world so boring and depressingly low-key. I want to be Raquel Welch in One Million Years B.C. or Catherine Deneuve in Belle du Jour. Am I mad?
AL: I can totally relate to that! I love old Hollywood tyrants and blond bombshells. I love everything from the '50s. I love Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield. I think you should just go for it and make the past today, but just update it. No matter what you do, even if you were to emulate these stars, it would look totally different in the world that we live today because it was such a different time then. I always like to try to be very eclectic and I've always been considered very modern; I guess it just comes out that way.
I like to take the look of tiny dresses and bobbed hair from the '20s and blend it with the fashion of today. My favorite must-have wardrobe accessory would be my heels and of course my eyelashes -- they are really great, too. I think you should just express your femininity and not really care what anyone thinks. Make yourself happy and then you will make everyone else happy.
Coming Nov. 29: author Reichen Lehmkuhl on memoir writing.
