The Grand Strand is gaining some street cred among surfers. Well, among surfer-shoppers, at least.Ron Jon Surf Shop will open its eighth U.S. location Friday, and the national chain has chosen Barefoot Landing as the spot for its 9,000-square-foot store.Workers are still applying the last coats of paint and preparing the merchandise for the customers, who presumably will be in search for some of the high-price items that can't be found in your typical retail store.Ron Jon's has extensive displays of surfboards in several price ranges. A few that were in place Wednesday were $199, $439 and $589, for example. A few of the skateboards on display were $150 and $179.The majority of the floor space is taken up by the clothing for men, women and children, including $15 T-shirts, $42 bathing suits and $36 tube tops.The Ron Jon brand is also on sunscreen, stickers, and beach accessories.The store will be open for its regular business hours starting Friday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.Ron Jon's will employ 30 people locally, according to the company."We feel the one-of-a-kind Ron Jon Surf Shop culture will be enjoyed by both the areas residents and visitors," Ed Moriarty, president of the company, said in the announcement of the new store.Ron Jon Surf Shop was founded in 1961 in Long Beach Island, N.J.For information, visit www.ronjons.com .

Claire's in Coastal Grand opened in its new digs last week. The store doubled its space in the Food Court area to 2,000 square feet. Claire's took over the space of the next tenant.
