No Wal-Mart for Garden City

Wal-Mart has no plans to build a new store in Garden City Beach at this time, company officials said this week.

Television stations reported recently that a Wal-Mart store was in the works for the south end of the Strand. The chain has five locations in Horry County, one in Georgetown and one in Brunswick.

"While we continue to be interested in the Myrtle Beach/Garden City Beach area, we do not have a confirmed site at this time," said Tara Stewart, spokeswoman for Wal-Mart.

Ikea plans store closer to Strand

An Ikea store will be within driving distance of the Grand Strand within the next two years, according to company officials.

The Swedish home furnishings retailer announced plans Wednesday to build a store in Charlotte, N.C. - the chain's first location in the Carolinas.

Currently, the closest site is in Atlanta, approximately a six-hour drive from Myrtle Beach. Charlotte is 3½ to 4 hours from the Grand Strand.

The company hopes to begin construction in fall 2007 and finish in spring 2009.

Men get makeovers at mall

Some prominent men in Myrtle Beach will undergo fashion makeovers at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dillard's in Coastal Grand Myrtle Beach mall.

The event, sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Women's Club, is called "Make Over My Man."

Participants include Myrtle Beach Police Lt. Doug Furlong, Myrtle Beach Middle Principal Roger Gray, CK Photography owner Carl Kerridge, Myrtle Beach city spokesman Mark Kruea, radio show hosts Jack Murphy and Bob Natale, Wachovia Bank Executive Vice President Nick Sherfesee, and First Presbyterian Church youth minister Ansel Talbert.

National firms look to build

Representatives from two national companies went before Myrtle Beach's Community Appearance Board on Wednesday for approval of new buildings at Coastal Grand.

Men's Wearhouse requested a 8,055-square-foot commercial building on Oak Forest Lane. Burger King asked for conceptual review for a restaurant at 2391 Coastal Grand Circle.

Coastal Grand officials had no comment on the status of talks with the companies Wednesday.

Pharmacies add MB stores

Myrtle Beach residents will have two new chain pharmacies to choose from.

Eckerd at 29th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach opened next to Drifter's Saloon. Part of the Chicora Apartments at 3701 Kings Highway have been demolished to make room for a Walgreen's Pharmacy.

In other Grand Strand retail news:

A new Family Dollar Store is scheduled to open in February in Aynor. Construction began in December on the store on U.S. 501. The chain operates 6,000 stores in 44 states and has headquarters in Matthews, N.C.

Matt Morris has been named marketing director of Colonial Mall-Myrtle Beach. Morris joined Colonial Mall from QVC in Pennsylvania. Former marketing director Kim Dayvault is now marketing/specialty retail director.
