LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER
Now that you know the candidates and where they stand on the issues, here's where you come in. It doesn't matter who you root for, only that you vote, and the registration deadline is approaching.
In order to be eligible to vote for the Nov. 4 election, you must register to vote 30 days prior, which means by Oct. 4, which is a week from Saturday. Of course, you also must be 18, a legal resident and not be convicted of a felony unless you have served the entire sentence. You also can't be currently incarcerated, but Surge isn't distributed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, so we might not be reaching that demographic (except during inmate online sessions).
So all that's left is for you to get off your butt, go to the library or other location, fill out a form and, presto, you are a registered voter. In fact, you can even do so from the comfort of your own computer.
Horry County now offers online voter registration at its web site, www. horrycounty.org. Simply go to the web page, click on "Departments," then click on "Voter Registration & Election'' and click on the online form, which you'll have to print, fill out and mail in.
It takes a few days to mail it with a copy of your ID and signature, but it's the easiest way to register. And if you still don't want to get off the couch, you can get an absentee ballot at the same web site.
Other locations where forms can be found include any local chamber of commerce office, county libraries, Department of Motor Vehicle offices, Department of Social Services, mental health departments, health departments or the main office at 103 Elm Street, Conway. A copy of your S.C. driver's license or ID is required.
Basically, it takes less time to register to vote than it does to actually vote, so there's no excuse for not doing so before Oct. 4 (which is a Saturday, but the voter registration office in Conway will be open that day from 9 a.m. to noon. Then, of course, all you have to do is get out on Nov. 4 and push a few buttons.
May everyone vote, and may the best candidate win.
