MYRTLE BEACH -- Myrtle Beach got hits when it needed them and strong pitching all night in a 2-1 win over Kinston on Wednesday night at BB&T Coastal Field in pitcher Paul Clemens' first start of the season.
Clemens is an often-used right-handed reliever who had already made 12 appearances for Myrtle Beach (29-48, 3-4 second half) since being called up from Low-A Rome on May 10. It was also his longest outing of the year, lasting five innings before giving way to Angelo Paulino.
Clemens also took more than a whole point of his ERA, dropping it from 5.59 to 4.44. He allowed just one hit, no runs and struck out five while walking one in the no-decision.
