The first weekend in December still can be called Weekend of Champions, but Williams-Brice Stadium no longer will be football championship central.
The executive committee of the S.C. High School League has accepted proposals from Clemson and Benedict to hold the league's title games this year, according to associate commissioner Dru Nix.
The Class AAAA (Division I and II) and AAA championship games will be Saturday, Dec. 3, at Clemson. Class AA will compete at Benedict's Charlie W. Johnson Memorial Stadium on Friday, Dec. 2.
Class A championships again will be played a week earlier at Benedict.
Never miss a local story.
"The big difference is it will be just one day up at Clemson instead of two," Nix said.
The past two years, the title games for Class AA, AAA and AAAA have comprised a two-day affair at Williams-Brice. Class A held its championship games a week earlier; last season was its first at Benedict. The three previous years, Class A played at S.C. State's Oliver D. Dawson Stadium.
Changes in venue are considered by SCHSL each year.
"We send out the bids every year, and they take the proposals every year and hear the thoughts of the membership," Nix said. "The process was no different this year."
Clemson hosted the 2008 title games for AAAA, AAA and AA. Its winning proposal included no charge for game-day staffing and the use of Memorial Stadium, with financial assistance provided by the Clemson Chamber of Commerce.
Nix would not disclose the terms of this year's proposal, and Clemson associate athletics director Robert Ricketts could not be reached for comment Monday.
The executive committee will vote at its April 28 meeting on Class AA's initiative to split into two divisions.
The committee also decided to move the Lower State basketball finals to the Florence Convention Center in March 2012. The eight semifinal games were played at The Citadel this year, but without a schedule for Southern Conference competition, the school was unable to submit a proposal for next year's event.
