Carolina Forest head football coach Marc Morris and three Grand Strand gridiron stars were honored Sunday, named to the S.C. Football Coaches Association’s Palmetto Champions All-Star football team.

Morris was named the Lower State 5A Coach of the Year. Despite a season in which his team has battled through a litany of injuries, the Panthers find themselves 6-2 overall, 2-1 in Region VI-5A.

A pair of Carvers Bay standouts were recognized, as senior defensive end Byron Young was tagged the Lower State 2A Lineman of the Year, while punter and kicker Daquan Carr earned Specialist of the Year honors for the classification.

Though doing vastly different things for the Bears — Young harassing opposing ball carriers, while Carr has fared well in booting kicks deep and flipping field position — both have been instrumental in the team’s resurgence the second half of the season. Carvers Bay needs only a win this Friday night against Mullins to clinch the Region VII-2A title.

Also honored was Green Sea Floyds’ Jacob Springs, whose contribution to the Trojans’ vaunted rushing attack earned him the Lower State Class A Lineman of the Year award.

Overall, 25 players and 10 coaches were selected for awards. From the list, a Palmetto Champions All-Star lineman, back, specialist and coach of the year will be announced in late November.

There will not be a Palmetto Champions banquet following the season, however, the result of Hurricane Matthew forcing the high school football season to be pushed back a couple of weeks.
