Coastal Carolina University men's basketball head coach Cliff Ellis has been named the 2014 Gene Bartow Award from CollegeInsider.com.
Ellis led Coastal to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993 and became just the 10th coach in NCAA Division I history to lead four different programs to the NCAA Tournament and holds a career 8-9 record in the NCAA Tournament, according to a university release. He has taken three teams to the "Sweet 16" including his 1990 Clemson squad, his 1999 Auburn team and his 2003 Auburn team.
This is the second year of the Gene Bartow Award, named after longtime coach Gene Bartow. The award recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to the game, on and off the floor, according to the release.
Gelibert, Nelson honored
Jessica Gelibert and Reggie Nelson of the Coastal Carolina University track & field team have been named the Big South Women’s Track Athlete of the Week and Big South Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, for their performances at the Tiger Track Classic last week, the league announced today. This marks the second time this season that Gelibert and Nelson have been honored during the same week. The pair was named the Women’s Track Athlete of the Week and Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on March 27 as well.
Schaeffner wins third
Coastal Carolina University’s Lena Schaeffner was named the Big South Golfer of the Week for her team-leading 14th-place (tied) finish at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate, the conference office announced Thursday.
The Golfer of the Week honor is Schaeffner's third of both the 2013-14 athletic season and her career. She earned the honor for the week ending Oct. 31 after her seventh-place showing at the Palmetto Intercollegiate and again for the week ending March 27 after tying for second at the Briar’s Creek Invitational.
