So far, no one has sent me video of the rampant public sex going on, though I received one photo of a young lady in thong.
To recap: That’s one photo of one thong from a weekend that saw maybe 400,000 tourists in town.
Here’s my column that puts things into perspective: Reader explains why I keep missing all the public sex
Before this past weekend’s Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest, I watched a local TV station air an interview with a woman who said she had seen public sex during a previous Bikefest.
This is from that pre-Bikefest WMBF News interview:
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Several community members who publicly voiced their concerns after last Memorial Day weekend are still apprehensive about the upcoming weekend.
Ocean Boulevard will be the focal point of the city's safety plan during Memorial Day weekend, and though the city is working to make sure this year will be different, some are still sick with anxiety and concerns for their own neighborhoods just beyond Ocean Boulevard.
"They were having sex in the street, they were defecating, urinating, in parking lots, the language that they used, they would stop traffic, they would have traffic tied up; you couldn't get around your neighborhood," Linda Griffin said.
Linda Griffin spoke during the very public meeting just after Memorial Day weekend last year, and still feels the same way today.
This morning I heard a man call into a local radio station and proclaim that he saw sex on the streets this past weekend.
In neither case did those doing the interviewing ask any follow-up questions to determine the veracity of such claims. So that’s why I’m asking that anyone who witnessed such things during this past weekend get in touch with me at firstname.lastname@example.org and tell me when and where and how. And given that just about everything is caught on video these days, I would imagine if all of this kind of debauchery is going on throughout Myrtle Beach in public, someone would have caught something. No?
I remember speaking to then Myrtle Beach City Manager Tom Leath about this issue many years ago, maybe the late 1990s. Then, too, people were claiming that there was all sorts of public sex going on during Bikefest in Myrtle Beach but, for some reason, when city officials asked them follow-up questions, they ended up saying they were told by someone else that it was happening, not that they’d seen it themselves.
I still don’t get why if this weekend is so awful and horrible so many critics have to make up stories and push myths. Do you?
