‘Redskins’ name no
badge of honor
Regarding the letter about the name "Washington Redskins" being respectful … Seriously?
The terms Braves, Chiefs, Indians, Warriors, Seminoles, etc. are not derogatory. They glorify the strength and the fighting spirit of the Native American.
The term "Redskin" was a derogatory term used scornfully by the white man who saw the Indians as a nuisance who stood in the way of what they wanted — land.
"Washington Redskins" is a racial slur. "Washington Warriors" or "Washington Braves," not so much.
Obama finally makes
a good decision
I have never embraced anything President Obama believes in or has done. Generally he has proven himself to be either incompetent and or deliberately self-serving.
Now I see an exception. I commend President Obama for making a common sense, non-political appointment in selecting Bob McDonald to run the Veterans Administration.
Bob is an experienced and proven business executive. I believe he will do what has never been done before, which is to run a government agency like a business, delivering the required services in a timely and cost effective manner.
The American people had a chance to select such an experienced individual to be President in 2012 and blew it. I sincerely hope they reconsider in 2016.

Italian fest fees
serve good purpose
I am a member of the Sons of Italy in America, Myrtle Beach Lodge 2662. Our summer festival was held the weekend of June 28-29. Our president Connie Carlino announced in the July newsletter that it was the best ever and we had over 5,000 adults in attendance that each paid a $1 entrance fee.
Per radio announcements as well as an article in the The Sun News’ Kicks section, the $1 charged was designated as an additional donation to our eight local charities that we contribute to quarterly.
I am sure that they will be pleasantly surprised to hear that they will be receiving approximately an extra $625 each. I am proud to be affiliated with such a philanthropic organization.
