Dustin Johnson's fantastic 4th place US Open finish while shooting a final round 73 highlights the terrific effort of another CCU golfer, amateur Andrew Dorn, who missed the cut but made the dance.

Our young golfer shot 159 to miss out playing on the weekend but recorded a 2-round best-ball 73 on one of the toughest tests of golf in America.

I played on a couple of CCU golf teams years ago that featured “the sheik,” David McKinsey — that guy could play with anyone when he was on, which was just about anytime he teed it up.

Dustin Johnson took CCU golf to a new level of respectability and Mr. Dorn has picked up the banner. Golf is rebounding on the Grand Strand and college golf is doing great.

Grand Strand golf owes Dustin Johnson a lot. When he's announced on worldwide television playing in the final groups for national championships and "Myrtle Beach, S.C." is announced, he does us proud, and he does us a favor.

Thank you Dustin — and Andrew.

The writer lives in Garden City Beach.
