The events of Memorial Day weekend have put a dark cloud over the Grand Strand that may result in fewer vacationers and fewer new residents coming to the area.
I believe it is time that the Grand Strand clearly defines itself as a family- and business-friendly community.
Clearly, Atlantic Beach has no interest in reigning in the Bikefest crowd so it is up to others to fix the problem.
Require Atlantic Beach to pay all overtime costs for police and other costs incurred by nearby communities as a result of Atlantic Beach hosting Bikefest. During Bikefest:Reduce speed limits to 25 mph except 17 Bypass. Set up sobriety and vehicle safety roadblocks along Ocean Drive, 17 Business, and other streets.Close off sections of Ocean Drive to two way traffic and close of Ocean Drive at the Old Pavilion. In my opinion these steps need to be taken to sent a signal to visitors that you behave or be gone.
