I can anticipate some replies to my letter, but nonetheless I have a right to send it. My comment on the open gun carry law in restaurants is for those of us that do not want some one with a legal permit and a bad temper sitting next to us in a restaurant , as is what just happened in a movie theater where a legal law-abiding person had a gun and decided to shoot and kill someone over a cell phone argument.
If he had not had his gun with him, a husband and father would be alive and he would not be facing prison. A good old-fashioned fist fight might have occurred, but no dead bodies.
The argument is that the law-abiding permit-carrying gun holders want to be able to protect themselves. So someone in a restaurant has a gun and feels threatened. Maybe an argument has started, someone makes a wrong move and before you know it other patrons are dead.
Is that really what you want? if not, I suggest you contact the corporate offices of our local theaters and restaurant's and let them know that if they do not display a “no guns allowed” sign that they may be left with a restaurant full of gun-carrying patrons.
I suppose the alternative would be a section in a restaurant for gun permit holders and another for those of us who are not obsessed by guns. It worked for smoking and non-smoking, another habit that threatens lives. Of course that would be an extreme measure, but after a few hundred more people are gunned down, maybe the politicians who are supposed to serve all of us will stop catering to the NRA lobby .
The writer lives in Myrtle Beach.
