Joyce Brothers left legacy
for mental health access
Never miss a local story.
Dr. Joyce Brothers, who pioneered mass media counseling, recently died at the age of 85. She pioneered opening the air waves to discussions of love, marriage, and parenting. She went on to become an author, syndicated advice columnist, and TV and film personality, setting the stage for today’s one-name TV doctors (Phil, Drew, and Oz). Phil McGraw called her “a pioneer in the field of mental health…in her own gentle way, she was able to get people talking about their emotional issues and problems.”
She gave up her teaching positions at Hunter College and Cornell University to be a stay-at-home mom, which she firmly believed in. However, to make ends meet, she became a contestant on the old quiz show, the $64,000 Question, and won. This opened opportunities for her to become a TV psychologist. Her famous line was, “The best proof of love is trust.”
The greatest psychology book of all, the Bible, agrees with her. Trust is the key to marriage and the home. Trust God. Trust your mate. Trust your children. And trust your parents. You will pioneer and develop a deeper relationship with each other for the rest of your lives.
The writer is minister at Myrtle Beach Church of Christ.
Man is ignoring
the laws of God
I, as an American citizen all my life, am happy, joyful that my country recognized God in our constitution of marriage between a man and a woman. Who is man to try and destroy what only God can create and has created in the Garden of Eden?
My heart is very sad and grieved that citizens of this country believe that they can overturn God’s plan.
Wake up America, God is speaking to all of us to do the right, not the wrong. He has given us his Holy Bible as our guide. Who is man to think he can reverse God’s plan, shame on man.
We will all suffer much by this mistake. God’s judgment is sure.
