Re May 19 article, “Crabby fun for all” on the Little River Blue Crab Festival
It was not fun for myself, my wife and two friends whom we had invited to attend the Blue Crab Festival with us.
We arrived at the parking area on U.S. 17 just before 11 a.m. One of the shuttle buses was just departing so we assumed a wait of approximately 20 minutes would be in store for us. Thirty-five minutes later a bus arrived and approximately 25 people boarded. After another 20 minutes another bus arrived and five people were allowed to board. Another bus was seen arriving and departing the medical center parking lot but immediately proceeded up U.S. 17 towards the festival, obviously already fully loaded from the stop at the medical center.
After waiting well over an hour we left the parking area along with many others.
There was a loss in admission fees along with lost sales to vendors at the festival and missed food and beverage sales. If saving money having fewer buses running was the intent, it was a false saving.
This was to have been our fourth year attending the Blue Crab Festival. Sadly, we missed out due to poor planning by the organizers.
Surely transportation to the festival can be handled in a more professional manner. Wait times should be no more than 20 minutes. More shaded area should be provided. There needs to be some communication between the buses, the festival management and those waiting for transportation. Couldn’t someone be at the parking lot with a cell phone and at least keep us informed as to the extensive wait time.
All in all it was very disappointing. We felt badly having recommended attending to our friends. Honestly, I don’t know if we would attempt attending again. With an admission charge of $5 per person it seems better bus service could be provided as part of the cost of doing business.
