A recent edition of the Sun News brought both happy and sad news. On the happy side, I am elated about Issac Bailey being selected as a Nieman Fellow. When we moved to the area, our daughter, a Davidson graduate, told us to make sure to read The Sun News in which the wit and wisdom of another Davidson alum, Issac, could be found. Her advice was sound. Issac is to journalism what another Davidson alum, Stephen Curry, is to basketball. I look forward to reading the fruits of his study.
On the sad side, I was disappointed to read about U.S. Rep. Tom Rice taking his turn on the floor of the U.S. House to take his whacks at the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). I had hoped that he would be a person who would move away from partisan rhetoric and truly seek to construct a bridge across the great partisan divide. But there he was, right next to Mark Sanford, spouting the same old sound bites.
