Re May 18 letter by Charles Stokes, “Raising the tax bar once again”
No offense, Mr. Stokes, but one way or another, the residents of Horry County will end up paying more to help Horry County Fire Rescue with staffing and equipment needs. Perhaps we will pay higher taxes or higher insurance premiums. Perhaps we will pay a higher emotional cost when fire and rescue equipment response time is too slow to save loved ones. Perhaps we will pay more when the fire and rescue equipment breaks down on the way to the vacant building and the spreading fire threatens nearby dwellings and businesses.
When these events occur, and they are bound to without upgraded equipment and personnel, no one wants to wish she had held just one more bake sale or knocked on just one more door.
