My name is Cali DeGaetano, and I am a student at Horry County’s Early College High School. I have completed service learning by cleaning up woods, beaches, trails and waterways with my friends, classmates and my biology teacher, Mrs. Carter. Heather Weeks from Coastal Carolina University was one of our mentors who helped us learn about the environment and helped us get connected with Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge.
Cleaning the woods, lakes and trails while learning about the effects of littering opened up my eyes and my friends’ eyes. The waterways need more attention. The people who fish there or ride their boats on the water tend to leave their trash on the ground or it flies off their boats or trucks. If everyone in Horry County came together and made a difference, our county would be a much better and cleaner place to live.
