Letter | A few proposals for Surfside Beach road safety

If the Town Council in Surfside Beach were really interested in safety, they would allow a traffic light to be installed at the entrance to Deerfield Plantation on U.S. 17 Business and 13th Avenue North, where people have been killed leaving Surfside United Methodist Church.

If the Town Council in Surfside Beach were really interested in safety, they would allow a traffic light to be installed at the entrance to Deerfield Plantation on U.S. 17 Business and 13th Avenue North, where people have been killed leaving Surfside United Methodist Church.

For many years a light has been recommended but Surfside Beach blocks it every time. If they made the street by the church one way, their objections would be gone as all cars would have to turn. There are many more accidents in that area per year than the few on Ocean Boulevard.

If they really want a safer Ocean Boulevard, install a lane for golf carts or make them pull over for cars. The speed humps on Surfside Drive are a safety hazard for tourists. As it is now, motorists are not visiting because of parking fees and fines. (There is even a box to accept fines at the pier lot.)

The writer lives in Deerfield Plantation.
