Letter | Why not treat guns like cars?

I support expanded background checks prior to gun ownership; however, our South Carolina elected officials do not.

I support expanded background checks prior to gun ownership; however, our South Carolina elected officials do not.

As I pondered this, I suddenly thought perhaps our illustrious officials are right. After all, we do not require background checks prior to getting a driver’s license and our cars are deadly weapons. Therefore, I suggest that we treat gun ownership exactly the way we treat automobile ownership.

First, you have to pass a test and get a license with a photo and, that license will have to be renewed periodically. Second, you will have to pay personal property taxes on your gun each year. Third, you will have to register your gun and that registration will have to be renewed yearly. Last, but not least, you will have to carry liability insurance on your gun.

Since we accept these requirements as the responsibilities assumed for the right and privilege of driving a car, so, too, can we accept these requirements as the responsibilities assumed for the right and privilege of owning a gun.
