Can’t our representatives in the U.S. Congress imagine the agony of the parents of those children killed in Newtown, the struggle Rep. Gabrielle Giffords faces every day just to walk and talk or the nightmares forever for the people in that movie theater in Colorado?
How can this not rouse them to pass serious gun control legislation such as a ban on private sales of large scale automatic weapons, large magazine ammunition and the requiring of federal documentation for all such gun sales and transfers? Instead they hide behind this nit-picking argument for the “right to bear arms.” These laws will not infringe on the constitutional right to self protection or the right to hunt for food or target shoot.
As a Catholic and a Franciscan who tries to follow the ways of peace and prayerfulness, I cannot understand people who would oppose such common sense efforts to control this kind of terrible violence that seems to be happening more and more often in our country. I especially can't understand public servants who would ignore the vast majority of their constituents’ efforts to get such legislation passed in favor of accepting financial support they might receive from the gun lobbies of the NRA and gun manufacturers.
We should remember each congressman or congresswoman who would vote against these common sense and caring measures at their next try for re-election.
