Before I took the eight-hour class and the fingerprints for criminal background checks by SLED and the FBI, I would have agreed with the gentleman whose letter was published in the March 26 edition of The Sun News (“Freer gun laws would improve safety,” by Earl H. Conrad) stating his opinion that the requirements for a S.C. concealed weapon permit were an infringement on his Second Amendment rights. Now I believe that the requirements are a very important prerequisite that residents should fulfill before being legally entitled to carry a concealed weapon.
Us residents who passed the course learned the facts about under what circumstances we could legally fire our weapons, gun safety which is very important to know, and pass the marksmanship test so that if we had to use our weapons we would be able to hit instead of possibly missing our attacker(s) . The required course is excellent and comprehensive. I think it’s better for me to keep my weapon concealed so as not to shock people who would see it if it was carried openly.
