I am writing in support of the Constitutional Carry Act of 2013.
I moved here from Pennsylvania, where I was licensed for concealed carry under “shall issue.” I consider the requirements in South Carolina to be an infringement of my Second Amendment rights. In essence, any areas outside of my vehicle or property are declared a gun-free zone for me. But I notice in the news reports, on a daily basis, those zones are not gun free for criminals.
Florida enacted concealed carry in 1987 and the homicide rate dropped 21 percent while rising 12 percent nationally. FBI statistics show a 26 percent higher rate of violent crime in states restricting the rights of law abiding gun owners, and a robbery rate 58 percent higher.
I hope our legislators will vote to uphold the Constitution, with the added benefit of helping to make our streets unsafe for criminals.
