In my criminology class this semester, we have frequently discussed the fact that the media typically focuses on street crime. Less than 1 percent of crime is homicide, but 35-55 percent of crime stories are about homicide. Even though The Sun News does cover a lot of street crime stories, I am surprised at the number of times the Bahama Island and Crystal Palace condominium scam have made the headlines.
In regards specifically to the Duwayne Woods article published on March 20, I was not surprised to learn that all three of the men involved pleaded guilty. Due to the vast amount of cases in our court system, accepting a plea bargain has become the norm. The judge, defense and prosecution all know what a crime is worth, so they work together to make a fair compromise for the defendant. For almost every case, it has become quicker and more convenient to accept the plea bargain, which is why so many people choose that option.
