Re: Feb. 3 article by Seanna Adcox, Associated Press, : “Worried tax filers add to hacking cost”
I was completely outraged by the attitude of the reporter who wrote the piece in The Sun News regarding how “SC taxpayers will add to the hacking costs” because they insist on “snail mailing “ their returns to SCDOR rather than e-filing!
Are you for real that we should be worried about the extra costs because this department, which collects all of the tax revenue for the entire state, failed to have the necessary security encryption in place in their computer systems? You make it sound like we the taxpayers are to blame for the debacle.
How about the millions of dollars which will have to be spent by me and the 3.8 million taxpayers who had their IDs ripped off for needed identity theft protection coverage? Will the SCDOR cover those costs for the rest of our lives? Of course not. What good is just a year?
Never miss a local story.
I retired 2.5 years ago to beautiful South Carolina after 50 years in the work place. Now that I'm here, I'll have to spend the rest of my life (like all others here who are in the same boat) looking over my shoulder for fear somebody will try to financially ruin me because they now have my Social Security Number... forever. Who cares about credit cards, which can be replaced? Social Security Numbers are for life. Moreover, isn't it mysterious that the culprits/scammers are still unknown?
I believe hiring 25 extra employees to process “snail mail” returns is dismally little in expense to what the rest of us will have to pay for protection. It doesn't matter now anyway, the horse got away before the barn door was closed. The only salvation for all of us SC taxpayers would be if the governor went to the Social Security Administration in D.C. and got us all new Social Securiy numbers. Sorry, but anything short of that solution is useless.
Keep the faith South Carolina! Consider that the 2013 returns for new “e-filer” taxpayers, and you old “paper filers” should be good to go.
