How can we increase the graduation rate?

I am a student at Horry County Early College High School, and I want to make a difference in children’s lives. According to the article “More S.C. students are graduating on time” the South Carolina high school graduation rate for the year of 2012 was 74.9 percent. We need to work together as a community to encourage children to stay in school, do their best, and graduate. I have done my part by volunteering with Sea Haven and more specifically, Project Lighthouse. A couple of my classmates and I go every Friday.

Sea Haven is an emergency crisis center for young adults who are runaways or homeless. It is a place that they can get anything they may need. With Project Lighthouse, we go to Kidz Village in Longs. We read with the children, do arts and crafts, play games, and so much more. I have seen firsthand how much of an impact we make on the children’s lives. You could too, so get out and volunteer.
