Changing times spark new hope in politics

Before the November election, the Republican remedy for the horrendous national debt piled up by Ronald Reagan and the two Bushes was painfully simple: The standard-of-living of the average American had to be drastically lowered by cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment compensation, food stamps and other benefits for the less fortunate of our society so that corporate welfare and the standard of living of the rich could be maintained.
